Who is Cancer?
Cancer is symbolized by The Crab, representing protection, vulnerability, and emotional depth.
In Greek mythology, Karkinos (Greek for “crab”) was sent by Hera to attack Hercules while he was fighting the Hydra. There are varying accounts of its size—some depict it as a regular crab, while others describe it as a giant.
Despite its efforts, Karkinos was ultimately crushed by Hercules. Moved by the crab’s loyalty, Hera honored it by placing it in the sky as the constellation Cancer.
Cancer’s ties to the summer solstice highlight its deep connection to cycles and transitions. In ancient Egypt, Cancer was represented not as a crab but as a scarab beetle—a sacred symbol of rebirth. The scarab was also believed to push the sun across the heavens.
In Mesopotamia, Cancer was linked to a turtle or tortoise—another symbol of protection and slow but steady progress. The Arabic manuscript of Kitāb al-Bulhān, or the “Book of Wonders,” the sign of Cancer is depicted as a crayfish.
Some have speculated that the sideways walk of these crustaceans, whether crayfish or crab, could symbolize the backward shift in day-length after the summer solstice in the Northern Hemisphere.
Cancer’s position at the summer solstice represents the sun at its highest point—a time of abundance and illumination.
Personality
Although Cancer season aligns with the sun’s peak during the summer solstice, its ruling planet is the Moon, which governs emotions, intuition, and the subconscious.
In effect, those born under this sign are deeply empathetic, with an intuitive understanding of others’ needs and feelings.
As a cardinal water sign, Cancer is both emotionally fluid and capable of influencing change, namely in other’s emotions. That is why even though they are a highly “emotional” sign, they are anything but weak. They are natural caretakers, often putting the needs of others before their own.
However, this can also make them prone to mood swings and emotional withdrawal. Their sensitivity means they may take things personally or retreat into their “shell” when feeling hurt or overwhelmed.
While their nurturing instincts make them loyal and generous, they can sometimes become overly protective or possessive.
Cancer’s strength lies in the way they carry their emotions. Beneath their protective shell is a heart that seeks connection – and most of all – the desire to be nurtured as they nurture others.

Cancer Season
Approximate Dates: June 21 – July 22
Cancer season marks the beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere—a time of emotional warmth, connection, and introspection.
What to Do
Cancer season invites you to slow down and reconnect with your emotions. This is a time for nurturing relationships, creating emotional security, and expressing creativity.
It’s also a powerful period for self-reflection and healing. It could be a great time to take up journaling, or other mindfulness hobbies like yoga and meditation. If you are struggling through some issues, it is also a good time to go to therapy.
Allow yourself to process emotions and seek comfort in the people and places that feel like home.
What Not to Do
Cancer’s protective shell can lead to emotional isolation if left unchecked. Be mindful of closing yourself off from others. Cancer season will likely cause some emotions to be heightened for a while – now is not the time to bottle them all up.
People will say it’s weak to let the side down. But this time, there is no greater show of strength.
It’s only natural to seek comfort and safety. True healing comes from opening up and allowing vulnerability.
Most Compatible Signs
Cancer thrives in relationships built on emotional security and trust. Pisces and Scorpio, fellow water signs, understand Cancer’s emotional depth and provide mutual support.
When it comes to stability, there is no better sign to offer it than the doting Taurus. In love and friendship, Taurus can give Cancer the loyalty and nurturing they crave for.
Virgo can also be a grounding force for Cancer. Though a little rigid at times, they are protective by nature, and can help Cancer feel safe and understood.
Least Compatible Signs
Cancer’s emotional intensity can feel a bit “too much” for some of the independent signs.
Aries may find Cancer’s sensitivity draining, while Libra’s social detachment may frustrate Cancer’s need for depth. It will take a lot of compromise and patience for either sign to be able to meet each other’s needs.
Sagittarius’s free-spirited nature may clash with Cancer’s desire for security. These two are like to be in a constant push-and-pull, and it won’t always be harmonious. One side will always want more from the other.
| Hold Up! It’s important to note that compatibility is not a fixed rule—just because two signs may not naturally align doesn’t mean they can’t build meaningful relationships! Many factors in an individual’s natal chart influence how they connect with others. In fact, the conflicts between these signs’ energies are often challenges that play out within a person’s own personality rather than outright clashes with others. |
Dream Careers
Cancer excels in careers that require emotional intelligence, creativity, and care for others. They thrive in supportive environments where they can nurture and protect.
