Who is Pisces?

Pisces is one of the oldest known constellations, with origins tracing back to Babylonian and Sumerian traditions.

The Babylonians referred to it as the “Great Swallow” (Nu Nu or Sinutu), symbolizing a bird associated with the goddess Anunitum, known as the “Lady of Heaven.” The swallow was linked to fertility, renewal, and the transition of seasons—a theme that aligns with Pisces’ role as the final sign of the zodiac.

At the same time, Pisces is sometimes called the “first constellation of the zodiac” because the sun appears in front of this constellation during the March equinox.

A tropical year—the period of time between successive March equinoxes—is measured based on this cycle. In this sense, the March equinox marks the beginning of a new astrological year, which is why Pisces often represents the starting point of the zodiac despite being the last sign.

By some definitions, we are still living in the Age of Pisces, since the sun continues to rise in front of the constellation Pisces at the March equinox.

In Greek mythology, Pisces is tied to the story of Aphrodite and Eros (Venus and Cupid in Roman mythology). When the monstrous Typhon attacked the gods, Aphrodite and Eros fled to the Euphrates River.

According to one version from Ovid, they were frightened and called upon the river nymphs for help. Two fish, the ikhthyes , appeared beneath them, offering safe passage. To avoid being separated, Aphrodite and Eros tied themselves together with a cord as they swam to safety. Zeus honored their escape by placing the two fish in the sky as the constellation Pisces.

In another version, Pseudo-Hyginus recounts that Aphrodite and Eros threw themselves into the river and transformed into fish to evade Typhon.

The symbolism of Pisces extends even further into the story of Aphrodite’s birth. According to legend, Aphrodite was born from sea foam after the severed genitals of Uranus were cast into the ocean.

The Ichthyocentaurs—Bythos (“Sea-Depths”) and Aphros (“Sea-Foam”)—were fish-centaurs with human torsos, the forelegs of horses, and the tails of fish.

They are said to have carried Aphrodite ashore after her birth. Like how most of the other myths end, the Ichthyocentaurs were also honored by being placed among the stars as the constellation Pisces.

Personality

Pisces is ruled by Neptune, the planet of dreams, illusion, and intuition, with Jupiter as a co-ruler, giving it expansive emotional depth and spiritual insight.
