What Makes a Blood Moon Special?

A blood moon occurs during a total lunar eclipse when Earth’s shadow completely covers the Moon, casting it in a deep red hue

This eerie glow happens because Earth’s atmosphere scatters sunlight and filters out the blue light, leaving only the red tones behind. This is the same thing that happens during sunsets, but with the moon!

From an astrological perspective, lunar eclipses mark turning points—moments of culmination, endings, and revelations.

This March’s eclipse falls in the sign of Virgo, meaning this will be a time to meditate on order, healing, and clarity.

But wait, if it’s still Pisces season, why is it called a Virgo blood moon? That’s because lunar eclipses happen during full moons, which always occur in the opposite sign of the current Sun season.

Since the Sun is in Pisces, the full moon—and this eclipse—lands in Virgo. If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed or stuck in chaos, this eclipse might shine a light on exactly what needs to be cleared out of your life.

Did You Know? Ancient doctors, including Hippocrates—the father of medicine—believed the Moon influenced blood flow! Surgeons once timed operations with the lunar cycle, avoiding the full moon to reduce bleeding. Even barbers in the Middle Ages followed this practice for bloodletting.

What to Do During a Lunar Eclipse (and What Not to Do)

DO:

  • Reflect & Release – Lunar eclipses are all about closure. Write down what you need to let go of and symbolically burn the paper (safely) to release old baggage.
  • Stay Grounded – With emotions running high, grounding exercises like meditation, deep breathing, or even walking barefoot on the earth can keep you centered.
  • Charge Your Crystals – While full moons are great for charging crystals, eclipses add an extra layer of power. Just be mindful! some practitioners prefer to cleanse rather than charge them during eclipses, as the energy can be intense.
  • Practice Divination – Tarot, runes, or scrying are all heightened under a blood moon. The veil is thinner, making it an ideal time to seek insight.

DON’T:

  • Manifest or Set New Intentions – Unlike regular full moons, eclipses are unpredictable. Instead of drawing things toward you, focus on letting go.
  • Make Major Decisions – Eclipse energy can cloud judgment, bringing hidden truths to the surface later. Wait until the dust settles.
  • Charge Water or Make Moon Water – Some witches avoid making eclipse water because the energy is unstable. If you do, use it cautiously.

Preparing Spiritually for the Eclipse

Think of a blood moon as a spiritual reset button. This is the perfect time to cleanse your space, energy, and mindset.

  • Cleanse Your Home & Aura – Use sage, palo santo, or salt to clear stagnant energy.
  • Write in a Shadow Work Journal – Eclipses reveal hidden truths. Use this time to dive deep into your subconscious.
  • Disconnect from Distractions – Social media and excessive noise can heighten anxiety. Consider a short digital detox to stay present with the energy.

Doing Tarot Readings During the Blood Moon

Astrologers say this Virgo blood moon is a call for practical magic. Expect heightened emotions, but also opportunities for clarity. If you’re pulling cards on the night of the eclipse, be prepared for brutally honest messages

The High Priestess, The Tower, or Death might make an appearance—don’t panic! These cards often signal transformation, inner wisdom, or necessary endings.

But what about The Moon card? It is going to be a lunar eclipse, after all…

This mysterious card can signal any illusions, hidden truths, and the subconscious bubbling to the surface, which would be very fitting on the night of an eclipse.

If you’re unsure what to ask, you can start with these questions:

  • What truth is being revealed to me during this eclipse?
  • What is being eclipsed in my life right now?
  • What should I release to move forward?
  • How can I best navigate this transition?

Is the Blood Moon Lucky or Ominous?

Blood moons have always had a bit of a reputation. In ancient times, they were seen as omens—signs of something big (and usually bad) on the horizon. Even today, they’re associated with major shifts and transformations in astrology.

But let’s be real—pop culture hasn’t exactly helped their image. Chances are you clicked on this thinking I might mention something about the endtimes.

I can’t blame you entirely though. Blood moons in movies and shows are almost never a good sign. Somehow that’s always when some ancient curse is unleashed, the villain gains unstoppable power, or something downright creepy happens.

And let’s not forget the word blood itself—kind of intense, right? I used to be a little hemophobic myself, so I still kinda get why the whole label makes people uneasy.

But blood moons aren’t here to doom us. Sure, they shake things up, but sometimes that’s exactly what we need.

Change can be messy, but it’s also how we grow. Whether you see it as lucky or chaotic really depends on your perspective.

How Long Will the Blood Moon Last?

This total lunar eclipse will last around 3 hours from start to finish, with totality—when the Moon is fully red—lasting about an hour. So, if you’re watching it live, make sure you set aside some time to witness the spectacle.

Preparing for the Lunar Eclipse, Wherever You Are

If you’re in a part of the world that will witness the blood moon firsthand, take it all in—it’s not every day the sky puts on a show like this.

And even if, like me, you’ll have to wait until September for the next one, this is still an important time to reflect, release, and realign. The energy of a blood moon is potent no matter where you are.
