How to Make Moon Water

Moon water is one of the easiest yet most potent ways to draw lunar energy from our moon. Used for manifestation, cleansing, and even emotional healing, this ancient practice has been around for centuries.

If you’re new to moon rituals or a baby witch looking for some new practices to add to yours, I’ve run through everything you need to know about how to make moon water and how to use it most effectively and meaningfully in your favorite spell work.

How To Make Moon Water At Home

Making moon water is incredibly simple. But make no mistake: the energy it holds can be powerful. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • A clean glass jar or bottle (preferably with a lid)
  • Fresh, filtered, or spring water (also called “living water”)
  • Access to the night sky

Steps:

  1. Take an empty jar or receptacle. Make sure it is clean. You can smudge the container with sage.
  2. Fill your jar with water and place it somewhere it can absorb the moon’s light. This could be outdoors (seal it properly to avoid contamination) or on a windowsill.
  3. Set an intention for your moon water. What do you want it to do? Manifest? Cleanse? You can say your intention aloud or write it on a piece of paper and place it under the jar.
  4. Leave the water out overnight to soak up the moon’s energy.
  5. In the morning, cap the jar and store it in a cool place.

Aaaand that’s it! You’ve made moon water.

The Best Time to Make Moon Water

While you can technically make moon water under any lunar phase, different phases carry different energies.

New Moon

Best for fresh starts, transition spells, and clearing stagnant energy. However, avoid making it at the exact New Moon moment, as the energy is still shifting. Instead, wait until an hour after the New Moon has begun.

Full Moon

The most powerful phase for moon water. The best time to charge it is just before the exact Full Moon, when lunar energy is at its peak.

Once the moon reaches its peak and starts waning, the energy subtly begins to decline.

Other Phases

Crescent moons are great for inner growth, first quarter moons for strength and action, and waning moons for releasing negativity.

You can check timeanddate.com to find the exact times of lunar phases in your location. Just because the moon looks full doesn’t mean it is!

When Not To Make Moon Water

Not all lunar phases are ideal for making moon water. Thankfully, the New Moon is generally a good time, as it signifies the beginning of a new cycle. Though some might argue otherwise, since it can also represent a time of rest and shadow rather than energy absorption.

Speaking of, the most recent New Moon in 9° Aries 00′ began this 29th March, 3:58 PDT.  This means that the Moon was in the 9th degree of the zodiac sign Aries, specifically at the 00′ (0 minutes) mark within that degree.

Similarly, eclipses are considered energetically chaotic – so it’s best to avoid making moon water during an eclipse.

Some people have reported making moon water during a lunar eclipse and finding the energy to be unstable rather than soothing. Instead of feeling refreshed and aligned, they experienced restlessness and emotional turbulence

Many practitioners recommend discarding any moon water made during an eclipse, as the unpredictable energy can interfere with its intended purpose.

What To Say When Making Moon Water

Words carry power, and the incantation you speak over your moon water helps solidify your intention. You can also write these down in a piece of paper and place it underneath your receptacle of choice.

Not sure where to start without feeling lost or silly? You can try some of these incantations to start:

If you need to stop overthinking: “Moonlight, help me quiet my mind and see things as they truly are. I charge this water to bring me clear thoughts, good judgment, and a sense of direction when I need it most.”

If you’re going through a rough time: “I release the weight I’ve been carrying. Let this water hold peace, softness, and the strength to heal, so I can move forward lighter and freer. May I heal. May I grow. May I let my worries go.”

If you want to attract abundance: “I open myself to new beginnings, lucky chances, and the right doors opening at the right time. May it bring growth, success, and the confidence to claim what’s meant for me.”

Of course, these are all just suggestions to bounce off of. You can always pen your own! Whatever you choose to say, speak with conviction. The clearer your intention, the stronger your moon water’s energy will be.

What Can You Do With Moon Water?

So now you have your moon water – now what? Even if you’re not into advanced spellwork, there’s still a million ways you can use this nifty lil potion to help you get in touch with your intuitive side as you engage in more mindful activities.

Manifest With It

Write a goal or intention and drop it into a jar of moon water. Let it sit overnight and then sprinkle the water around your space as a symbolic way of attracting your desires. You can also use it during release ceremonies. This is best done during the period following a full moon.

Cleansing Crystals & Tools

Use it to cleanse crystals or other spiritual tools. Water cleansing basically realigns your instruments with the water element and all it represents: your emotions, intuition, and the unconscious realm. You can also use it to cleanse your home to get rid of any negative energy.

Watering Plants

Giving your plants moon water can be a simple way to nurture them with an extra boost of intention. As long you know the water is clean, you can give it to your houseplants, herbs, or garden!

Some people even whisper affirmations to their plants while watering them, like “Grow healthy and strong” or “Flourish in your own time.”

Use It In Your Crafts

If you’re an artist or enjoy painting, using moon water in your watercolor or ink artwork can add an extra layer of intention to your work. Depending on the moon phase, your artwork can carry energies of growth, release, intuition, or manifestation. And how cool would it be to show off work you made using moonlight-infused water!

If you create knitted, crocheted, or handcrafted fabric items, you can even try rinsing these with moon water to infuse them with positive intentions and energy.

You could even mix moon water in with dye if you’re feeling extra crafty with fabric. This can be especially meaningful for handmade gifts or ritual garments.

Drink it

If made with clean, drinkable water, it can cleanse your energy if you’ve been feeling uneasy. Some believe it enhances intuition and emotional balance through “soul alchemy.”

As long as you made sure that the water was sealed properly and untampered with while left outdoors, you can either drink it straight, or add it to your nightly tea.

If you plan on drinking your moon water on the get-go, please be mindful of any other items you mix in it while charging.

Bonus: Use It for Dreamwork

Since the moon influences our dreams, you can use moon water to help you with dream recall or lucid dreaming. Before bed, take a few sips of the water, or dab a tiny amount on your temples.

Set your intention to remember your dreams or invite more vivid, insightful visions while you sleep. You can even jot down what you remember in a dream journal to keep track of your progress.

The moon’s energy might guide your dreams to bring you more clarity or understanding in your waking life.

Storing and Using Moon Water

Once your moon water is charged, it’s best to use it within a few days if you plan to drink it. If stored properly in a sealed glass jar in a cool, dark place, it can last up to a month.

Since it’s charged with the moon’s energy, you don’t want it sitting in direct sunlight for too long. A little light exposure isn’t a big deal, but you don’t want it soaking up solar energy for hours.

Just be mindful of any changes in smell or appearance—if it looks off, discard it and make a fresh batch under the next moon cycle.

What Not To Do With Moon Water

Moon water can be used in so many ways, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

  • Don’t leave it uncovered overnight, especially if you plan to drink it.
  • Don’t store it in plastic containers, as they can leach chemicals into the water over time. Personally, I recommend using glass or porcelain containers or bottles.
  • Be mindful of using moon water in hexes or curses. Moon water amplifies energy, reflecting back what’s already there. It’s best used for healing, protection, and personal growth rather than anything destructive.
  • Skip the salt. Unless it’s specifically charged or blessed, salt cleanses by absorption, which can cancel out your moon water’s energy. Instead, start with the cleanest, most natural water you can find, and if you want an extra layer of purification, sage the inside of your container before filling it.

Harness the Moonlight

Moon water is a simple yet magickal way to connect with lunar energy for manifestation, cleansing, and healing.

Whether you’re drinking it, using it in rituals, or incorporating it into your self-care routine, it’s a beautiful practice that deepens your connection to the cycles of the moon.
